Alexandrite

The color changing form of the mineral chrysoberyl is called Alexandrite. This gemstone was discovered in the early 1800"e;s in Russia and named after Czar Alexander II. Alexandrite is said to enable it"e;s wearer to forsee danger. The most sought after Alexandrites are a lovely green in daylight or flourescent light but change to red or slightly purplish red in the incandescent light from a lamp or candle flame. Alexandrite is the birthstone for June and also the 55th anniversary gemstone.

Alloy

A mixture of two or more metals.

Amber

Amber is ancient tree resin that has been fossilized over millions of years into a lovely organic gemstone. The biggest known deposits amber have been found around the Baltic Sea and in the Dominican Republic. Most of the world's Amber is in the range of 30 to 90 million years old.

Amethyst

This type of quartz is found in shades of purple ranging from light lavender to deep, intense purple with subtle flashes of red helps to draw your attention beyond the mind to the realm of pure spiritual knowledge. Amethyst is the birthstone for february. It is also the 6th anniversary gemstone.

Antique

Describes jewelry that, in our opinion, exceeds one hundred years of age.

Antiquing

A process of darkening the recessed areas of gold or silver jewelry to enhance the visibility of the engraving, thus lending the look of age or natural patination. Platinum cannot be antiqued.

Aquamarine

Aquamarine is a member of the beryl group of minerals. It is a transparent light blue to slightly greenish-blue gemstone and usually displays eye clean clarity. This gemstone assists in connecting with the ocean of awareness and creativity. Its youthful essence renews your spirit and nourishes you from a wellspring of spiritual energy. Aquamarine is the birthstone for march.

Jewelry constructed with hinges to make it flexible; jewelry with moveable parts.

Asscher cut

Also known as a square emerald. Square step cut with cropped corners.
